  Current U.S. State Department guidance requires U.S. citizens to obtain an Afghan visa before travel and warns that the de facto authorities may reject visas from Republic-era missions they do not recognize.
  - Applies to a U.S. citizen using an ordinary passport for a short visit; U.S. citizens treated as Afghan nationals or travelling on an Afghan passport follow separate rules.
  - The visa must be obtained before travel from a consular authority accepted by the Afghan de facto authorities; some Republic-era mission visas may be refused.
  - The passport must remain valid for at least six months beyond arrival and have a blank page.
  - Security advice, purpose restrictions, registration, carrier checks and final admission remain separate.
