Official evidence timeline

One group agreement or destination policy can support many passport relationships. Dates are recorded only when an official source establishes them.

  1. Current official routeVisa-free

    Guinea-Bissau: current ECOWAS Member-State citizens’ visa-free entry

The ECOWAS free-movement protocol gives Community citizens from the eleven other current ECOWAS Member States visa-free entry to Guinea-Bissau for a visit not exceeding 90 days.

    • Applies to a citizen of the named current ECOWAS Member State carrying a valid travel document issued by or on behalf of that Member State; passport code alone does not decide nationality, other travel-document categories, or dual-national document choice.
    • The ECOWAS Member States page retains a legacy sentence describing fifteen members, but its current named schedule and footer identify twelve. The explicit named current schedule governs this policy; Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger are handled only by the separate transition policy.
    • Entry must be through an official entry point with a valid travel document and international health certificate. A stay beyond 90 days requires permission from the appropriate authority.
    • Guinea-Bissau retains the protocol’s power to refuse admission to a Community citizen categorized as an inadmissible immigrant under its laws.
    • Residence, establishment, work, commercial activity, family, refugee, diplomatic, official, service, special-document, security and individual admissibility rules are not normalized by this short-visitor policy.
    11 passport nationalities covered

Benin, Cape Verde Islands, Côte d'Ivoire, The Gambia, Ghana, Guinea, Liberia, Nigeria, Senegal, Sierra Leone, Togo

  2. Current official routeVisa-free

Guinea-Bissau: transitional visa-free entry for Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger citizens

Although Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger withdrew from ECOWAS on 29 January 2025, ECOWAS directs relevant authorities to continue their citizens’ visa-free movement until further notice.

    • The current ECOWAS instruction is expressly transitional and applies until further notice; it must be rechecked for a subsequent ECOWAS Authority decision.
    • The instruction requires recognition of national passports or identity cards bearing the ECOWAS logo. This policy is limited to ordinary passports meeting that document condition and does not classify non-ECOWAS-logo, alien, refugee, emergency or other special travel documents.
    • The source maintains free movement, residence and establishment under ECOWAS protocols; the protocol’s official-entry-point, health-certificate, 90-day visitor extension and inadmissibility conditions remain material.
    3 passport nationalities covered

    Burkina Faso, Mali, Niger

  3. Current official routeVisa required

Irish ordinary passports: expressly pre-departure mission visas

DFA guidance establishes an advance mission-application or pre-flight possession requirement for these ordinary Irish-passport visitor routes.

    • GW: applications are made in person at Guinea-Bissau diplomatic missions in Paris or Lisbon. LR: applications from Ireland are submitted to the Liberian Embassy in London.
    • SS: the DFA says a visitor cannot fly to Juba without a valid visa, establishing that the visa must be held before departure; the page does not normalize any online filing channel as electronic issuance.
    • Visitor purpose, document, sponsor, registration, health, security and final-admission conditions remain applicable.
    1 passport nationalities covered

    Ireland

  4. Current official routeVisa on arrival

German ordinary passports: named visitor visas issued at arrival

The Federal Foreign Office expressly identifies a border-issued short-visitor route for each listed German ordinary-passport destination.

    • DJ: a visa can be applied for at entry. KM: tourist visa is issued on arrival at Grande Comore international airport. TM: airport issuance requires a pre-issued Turkmen Migration Service visa approval/invitation. CI: prior online application is followed by issuance at entry. GW: airport visa is available for 30 days; land-border issuance is unavailable. BD: normally available for tourism or business up to 30 days at Dhaka international airport, subject to listed documents. KH: tourist visa is available on arrival at all international border crossings.
    • TM and CI are classified as visa_on_arrival because the visa itself is issued at the border after pre-approval, not because of their online or pre-travel steps. This excludes special documents, work, residence and final admission.
    1 passport nationalities covered

    Germany

  5. Current official routeVisa required

Japanese ordinary passports: specified advance visitor visas

Japan MOFA expressly requires the listed visas to be obtained before entry or arrival.

    • DJ: obtain the purpose-appropriate visa before entry through an embassy or the named online application site; online application does not by itself prove electronic issuance.
    • GW: a visa is required regardless of entry purpose and must be obtained before arrival; yellow-fever and final-admission requirements remain applicable.
    1 passport nationalities covered

    Japan

  6. Current official routeVisa required

French ordinary passports: named advance visa routes

Current official material establishes advance mission processing or issuance for each listed French ordinary-passport visitor route.

    • AF: single-entry visas are issued by Afghanistan’s Embassy in France. KP: visa available through the DPRK General Delegation in France. LY: visa before arrival. SD: prior visa. SY: Syrian diplomatic or consular representation issues the visa. CG: obtain before departure; no arrival visa. SS: airlines may refuse boarding without a pre-departure visa and France-based applicants use the Paris embassy. CF: the CAR Paris Embassy processes the passport and short-stay application. GQ: no arrival visa and the Paris embassy states required documents. GW: French applications go to the Guinea-Bissau Embassy in Paris; its exceptional Bissau-airport route is not the standard France-resident route. LR: France residents apply through the Liberian Embassy. ML: Mali consulates in Paris or Lyon issue it; no arrival visa. NE: prior visa only; no arrival visa. NG: portal submission is followed by physical dossier submission to OIS Paris for processing. TD: diplomatic or consular mission issuance only; no border visa.
    • This records ordinary French-passport short-visitor routes only and does not normalize travel warnings, operational access, work, residence, special documents or final admission.

  7. Current official routeVisa required

Moldovan ordinary passports: named advance consular visitor visas

Moldova MFA's current ordinary-passport table requires a visa and identifies diplomatic missions as the obtaining method for these destinations.

    • Apply through the relevant diplomatic mission and obtain the visitor visa before departure; this is an advance consular route, not an inference from generic visa wording.
    • Mission operation, invitation requirements, Syrian and Afghan governmental-transition issues, closures, routes through Transnistria, special documents and final admission remain separate.
    1 passport nationalities covered

    Moldova

Mauritanian ordinary passports: named reciprocal visa-free short visits

Mauritania's current MFA records reciprocal visa-waiver agreements, without a diplomatic/service-only limitation, for Libya, Tunisia, Mali, Niger, Côte d'Ivoire, Guinea-Bissau and Chad.

    • Use a valid Mauritanian ordinary passport. The MFA page expressly limits several other agreements to diplomatic and service passports but does not apply that limitation to these seven named destinations.
    • The MFA list establishes the visa-waiver route only; it does not establish duration, work, residence, transit, entry point, carrier requirements, document-recognition, mission availability or final admission conditions.
    • This conclusion rests on Mauritania's named reciprocal agreements, not on ECOWAS membership or a regional free-movement presumption.

Rwandan ordinary passports: named visa-free short visits

Rwanda DGIE's current ordinary-passport schedule expressly records visa-free access for Bangladesh, Central African Republic, Côte d'Ivoire, Guinea-Bissau, Liberia, Mali and Niger. The Republic of the Congo row is classified separately from the controlling bilateral agreement.

    • This is limited to the named ordinary-passport rows in Rwanda DGIE's current outbound schedule; it is not inferred from EAC, AU, COMESA, bilateral or regional membership.
    • For CI, the destination MFA/SNEDAI pages describe a general applicant visa workflow but do not publish a Rwanda-specific override. Rwanda DGIE's passport-specific ordinary row says Visa not required, so the generic applicant route is not normalized as applying to this named visa-free passport.
    • Purpose, stay period, accepted document, special passports, carrier rules and final admission remain separate.
    1 passport nationalities covered

    Rwanda

  10. Current official routeVisa required

    • Work, residence, special passports, carrier rules and final admission remain separate.

    • This applies only to the Macao SAR Passport, not to a PRC passport, Hong Kong document, Portuguese passport, residence document or other travel document.
    • The DSI record identifies Osvaldo Vieira International Airport as the arrival-visa location and states a maximum period of 90 days.
    • Purpose, passport validity, fees, carrier requirements and final admission remain subject to the Guinea-Bissau authorities.

Current FCDO guidance establishes an ordinary British-citizen visitor visa application through the stated embassy or advance process for the listed destinations.

    • TD, CG, GW, LR and NE: FCDO directs the British-citizen visitor to the named embassy/consular application route before travel.
    • IR: apply well in advance; a British-passport applicant must use an organised tour or an Iranian sponsor. Kish Island is a distinct travel-agency/approval-before-arrival exception, not a general waiver.

Seychellois passports: named advance visitor-visa cohort

    • Applies to the ordinary Seychellois passport short-visitor baseline in the Ministry's current named list.
