Four visa-required ordinary passports: South African ETA-platform electronic visitor visas
China, India, Indonesia and Mexico ordinary-passport short visitors apply before travel through South Africa's locally branded Electronic Travel Authorisation platform and receive the approved visitor permission digitally.
- This current policy covers valid ordinary passports used for tourism or short visitor purposes. Work, residence, study, special documents, other visa categories and final admission remain separate.
- South Africa brands the application and delivery platform Electronic Travel Authorisation, but current Home Affairs and DIRCO records expressly treat these four nationalities as visa-required and the resulting permission as a visitor visa. MultiPass therefore normalizes the electronically applied-for and issued permission as eVisa rather than visa-exempt ETA access.
- Apply online before travel, scan the passport, submit a live facial image and requested trip information, pay the applicable fee and wait for approval. Home Affairs says an approved permission is delivered within 24 hours and can be stored in a smartphone wallet.
- The current airport implementation covers O. R. Tambo, Cape Town, King Shaka and Lanseria international airports. Biometric identity verification and ordinary immigration examination still occur on arrival.
- The system went live as a limited four-country pilot in 2025. The August 2026 launch says additional visa-required countries will be added progressively, so no unannounced nationality is inferred from the future rollout.
- Visa-exempt travellers may use the platform voluntarily for faster processing or extensions; voluntary platform use does not replace their underlying visa-free status.
