Nauruan ordinary passports: advance Schengen visa for Vatican access via Italy

A Nauruan ordinary-passport visitor needs the advance Italian or Schengen visa required for the unavoidable access route through Italy to Vatican City.

    • Vatican City is an enclave with an open Italian and Schengen border; this classifies the unavoidable access leg and does not call the instrument a Vatican visa.
    • Regulation (EU) 2018/1806 makes Nauru's Annex II exemption conditional on a visa-waiver agreement entering into force. The Council's register, last reviewed 3 March 2026, says the regime applies only after conclusion of that agreement.
    • Italy's current exemption page incorrectly lists Nauru despite the controlling EU condition. The higher-ranking Regulation and the Council's current agreement register control this adjudication.
    • Apply for the short-stay Schengen visa before travel through the competent Italian or other Schengen representation. Validity, supporting documents, purpose, admission and Holy See public-access controls remain separate.
