Hong Kong: Chinese Nationality Requirements
Hong Kong administers applications for Chinese nationality. Its passport listing does not represent a separate Hong Kong citizenship law.
Legal basis
Article 7 covers foreign or stateless applicants willing to follow China's constitution and laws who have close Chinese relatives, have settled in China, or have other legitimate reasons.
Residence and local ties
Officials consider right of abode, habitual residence, family, income, taxes, character and intention to remain. This guide sets no universal naturalisation residence-year threshold.
Chinese language
Sufficient Chinese-language knowledge is a listed factor; no numeric proficiency level is specified in this guide.
Other nationality
Article 8 states that an approved naturalisation applicant cannot retain foreign nationality.
Application evidence
Use the Immigration Department's nationality application and provide identity, residence and applicable family or other-reason evidence. Each case is assessed on its merits.
Scope and limitations
- Do not describe seven years of Hong Kong residence as automatic Chinese citizenship. This page does not decide right of abode or entitlement to an HKSAR passport.
Next review due . An official update can change these requirements sooner.
