Official evidence timeline

One group agreement or destination policy can support many passport relationships. Dates are recorded only when an official source establishes them.

  1. Current official routeCitizenship

Australian passport holders do not need a visa

Australian citizens enter Australia using their Australian passport rather than a visitor visa.

    • This citizenship rule does not describe non-citizen Australian travel documents.
    • An Australian citizen cannot use an ETA through another eligible passport.

  2. Current official routeVisa on arrival

New Zealand citizens obtain a Special Category visa on arrival

New Zealand citizens travelling on a valid New Zealand passport can apply for subclass 444 on entry.

    • The traveller must be a New Zealand citizen using a valid New Zealand passport.
    • The Special Category visa is granted only if its criteria, including relevant character requirements, are met.
    • The rule does not extend to non-New Zealand family members.

  3. Current official routeETA

Listed passports qualify for Australia's ETA

These passport holders can use the Electronic Travel Authority subclass 601 for qualifying visitor travel.

    • The traveller must hold a valid eligible passport and be outside Australia when applying and when the ETA is granted.
    • Taiwan official and diplomatic passports are excluded; British document status and other non-citizen documents have separate conditions.
    • Visitor stays are generally limited to three months per entry during the ETA's 12-month validity.
    • Criminal history can require a Visitor visa subclass 600 instead, and grant does not guarantee entry.

  4. Current official routeeVisa

Listed passports use Australia's eVisitor route

These passport holders can apply online for eVisitor subclass 651 for qualifying visitor travel.

    • The traveller must be a citizen holding a valid listed passport and be outside Australia when applying and when decided.
    • Visitor stays are generally limited to three months per entry during the eVisitor's 12-month travel period.
    • Criminal or health history can require a Visitor visa subclass 600 instead, and grant does not guarantee entry.
    • Passport codes that can use both ETA and eVisitor retain ETA as this dataset's primary access class.

Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Czechia, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia

  5. Current official routeVisa required

Other ordinary passports need an Australian visitor visa before travel

The listed ordinary-passport visitors need an appropriate Australian visa before travel; subclass 600 is the general tourist route, not a nationality-wide eVisa class.

    • The cohort covers ordinary national passports for tourism, cruises, or visits to family and friends from outside Australia.
    • Nationality alone does not establish one visa subclass for every case; business, medical, study, work, sponsorship, or another purpose can require a different route.
    • Online application and a digitally linked grant do not turn subclass 600 into a nationality-wide eVisa in this taxonomy.
    • Transit, crew, diplomatic, official, refugee, stateless, non-citizen, and other special-document routes remain outside this policy.
    • Existing visas, residence or citizenship status, New Zealand family routes, health, character, security, and border decisions remain case-specific.
