Official evidence timeline

One group agreement or destination policy can support many passport relationships. Dates are recorded only when an official source establishes them.

  1. Current official routeVisa-free

Named ordinary passports: 15-day unilateral tourist exemption

The current Iranian MFA eVisa portal lists 27 ordinary-passport nationalities entitled to a unilateral tourism visa exemption.

    • Tourism only; the current MFA portal states one non-extendable 15-day stay in each six-month period.
    • The current portal says some visa types for some nationalities must be applied for in person and some nationalities may not be issued a visa for political or diplomatic reasons; it does not publish a complete passport-code schedule for those exceptions.
    • This policy does not establish work, residence, transit, diplomatic, official, service, emergency, refugee, alien-document, group-tour, sponsor, third-country-residence, security, or individual-admission treatment.
    27 passport nationalities covered

United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Kuwait, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, Tunisia, Mauritania, Tanzania, Zimbabwe, Mauritius, Seychelles, Indonesia, Brunei, Japan, Singapore, Cambodia, Vietnam, Brazil, Peru, Cuba, Mexico, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia, Croatia, Belarus

  2. Current official routeVisa-free

Nine named foreign citizenships: visa-waiver rules

The current Iranian MFA eVisa portal identifies nine foreign citizenships as subject to Iran’s visa-waiver rules.

    • The portal describes these nationalities as subject to visa-waiver rules under internal laws, approvals, and bilateral agreements, but does not publish ordinary-passport stay length, purpose, entry point, passport-type, or recurrence terms.
    • This is a nationality-wide waiver classification only; it does not establish work, residence, diplomatic, official, service, refugee, emergency-document, transit, border-crossing, security, or individual-admission treatment.
    9 passport nationalities covered

Azerbaijan, Türkiye, Syria, Georgia, Armenia, Egypt, China, Oman, Kazakhstan

  3. Current official routeVisa on arrival

Lebanese, Venezuelan, and Malaysian nationals: permit at designated entry points

The current Iranian MFA eVisa portal says Lebanese, Venezuelan, and Malaysian nationals obtain necessary permits upon entry at designated entry points.

    • The portal calls the document a permit rather than a visa, but expressly makes it available upon entry at designated entry points. It is conservatively normalized as visa_on_arrival, not visa_free or eVisa.
    • Purpose, stay duration, document type, qualifying conditions, ports, security screening, and any prior approval are governed by the portal’s referenced established rules and conditions, which are not published as a code-level schedule.
    • This does not establish work, residence, diplomatic, official, service, emergency-document, transit, sponsor, security, or individual-admission treatment.
    3 passport nationalities covered

    Lebanon, Venezuela, Malaysia

  4. Current official routeVisa on arrival

Taiwan ordinary passports: named visa-on-arrival short visits

Taiwan MOFA BOCA's current outbound schedule identifies these destinations as issuing visas at arrival to Taiwanese travellers, including stated pre-clearance routes.

    • BY, IR and UZ require the schedule's stated pre-clearance before a visa is issued on arrival; online pre-clearance followed by border issuance is normalized as visa_on_arrival.
    • CI requires online registration, fee payment and an emailed approval code before the visa is issued at Abidjan airport; it is therefore arrival issuance, not an eVisa under this taxonomy.
    • LR: apply online, then present the approval QR code at Roberts International Airport for biometric collection and the visa sticker. The Liberia Immigration Service directs applicants in a country with a Liberian embassy to that mission instead.
    • This does not establish work, residence, non-visitor, transit-only, special-document, carrier, health, funds or final-admission treatment.

  5. Current official routeVisa on arrival

French ordinary passports: Iran preapproved arrival visitor visa

Current French government guidance expressly includes France among nationalities that may obtain a short-stay private-travel visa at certain Iranian airports after online preregistration.

    • Complete the required online preregistration and present its printed proof on arrival. The visa is issued at specified airports, so the route is preapproved arrival issuance, not an electronically issued visa.
    • This route is limited to short private travel and requires an ordinary passport; the source expressly excludes diplomatic and service passports. Embassy visa processing, work, residence, transit, carrier checks and final admission remain separate.

  6. Current official routeeVisa

German ordinary passports: Iran electronic visitor visa

Germany's current official guidance says the Iranian visa for a German national is electronically issued and can be applied for online before entry.

    • Carry the electronically issued visa as a printout; it is not placed in the passport.
    • The same guidance says that the reliability of the arrival-visa process since the COVID-19 pandemic is not confirmed and urgently advises against relying on it.
    • This excludes German-Iranian dual nationals, non-tourist purposes, exit-visa procedures, security conditions, and final admission.
    1 passport nationalities covered

    Germany

  7. Current official routeVisa required

British citizen passports: specified advance visitor visas

Current FCDO guidance establishes an ordinary British-citizen visitor visa application through the stated embassy or advance process for the listed destinations.

    • KP: tourist travel is normally organised and the visa application is sent directly to the North Korean Embassy; current general-entry restrictions remain material.
    • TD, CG, GW, LR and NE: FCDO directs the British-citizen visitor to the named embassy/consular application route before travel.
    • IR: apply well in advance; a British-passport applicant must use an organised tour or an Iranian sponsor. Kish Island is a distinct travel-agency/approval-before-arrival exception, not a general waiver.

    United Kingdom

  8. Current official routeVisa on arrival

Italian ordinary passports: specified arrival-issued visitor visas

Current Italian MFA guidance expressly identifies these arrival-issued visitor visa routes.

    • BD issue is for stays below 30 days and is not guaranteed; IR requires online e-visa procedure before airport issuance; JO has airport and stated land-border routes.
    • SY, BF and SL have stated border/airport issuance. Passport, health, invitation, payment, entry-point and final-admission conditions remain applicable.
    1 passport nationalities covered

    Italy

  9. Current official routeVisa on arrival

Belgian ordinary passports: Iran arrival tourist visa

Current Belgian guidance says Belgian tourists may use Iran's tourist visa-on-arrival process at Tehran Imam Khomeini Airport, while strongly advising advance issuance.

    • The stated route is tourist-only arrival issuance at Tehran Imam Khomeini Airport. Belgium strongly advises obtaining the visa before travel because a visa is not a right of entry.
    • Dual Iranian nationality, Israeli visa history, work, residence, special passports, carrier checks and final admission remain separate.

    Belgium

  10. Current official routeVisa required

Norwegian ordinary passports: Iran advance visitor visa

Norway's current guidance requires Norwegian visitors to obtain an Iranian visa through an embassy or consulate; Iran's official portal confirms that electronic submission is only the first application step and describes a visa sticker.

    • Obtain the visitor visa before travel through the Iranian embassy or consulate process. The online form alone is not the issued visa.
    • The treatment of dual Iranian nationals, work, residence, special passports, carrier requirements and final admission remain separate.
    1 passport nationalities covered

    Norway

  11. Current official routeVisa required

Hungarian ordinary passports: Iran advance visitor visa

Hungary's current consular guidance requires Hungarian citizens to obtain Iran's visa through the embassy process; the online application is not by itself an electronically issued visitor visa.

    • Complete Iran's pre-travel embassy visa process, which requires personal participation; an online submission and tracking service alone is not the issued visa.
    • Iranian dual-national treatment, work, residence, special passports, carrier requirements and final admission remain separate.
    1 passport nationalities covered

    Hungary

  12. Current official routeVisa required

Australian ordinary passports: Iran advance visitor visa

Australians must obtain Iran's visa through the Iranian Embassy in Australia before travel.

    • DFAT directs Australians to apply before travel through the Iranian Embassy in Australia; this is not an arrival-issued route.
    • Australian-Iranian dual nationals, exit visas, work, residence, special documents and final admission remain separate.
    1 passport nationalities covered

    Australia

Palestinian ordinary passports: 2026 advance-visa visitor cohort

The State of Palestine's current ordinary-passport schedule labels this exact destination cohort "Visa is required" and separately labels electronic and arrival-issued routes elsewhere in the same schedule. It is normalized as advance visa required.

    • This is the Ministry's ordinary-passport short-visitor baseline. The source separately labels eVisa and visa-on-arrival rows, so a bare "Visa is required" row is not recast as either route.
    • Georgia and Panama have separately stated waivers for holders of specified third-country visas. Those conditional document routes are excluded from this passport-only baseline.
    • Mission availability, passport recognition, individual admission, route, transit, work, residence, diplomatic, official, service and other special-document treatment are outside this policy.
    1 passport nationalities covered

    Palestinian Territory

  14. Current official routeVisa required

Dutch ordinary passports: Iran advance visitor visa

The Dutch Foreign Ministry requires Dutch-passport visitors to obtain the Iranian visa through Iran's Embassy in The Hague before travel.

    • Applies to a current ordinary Netherlands passport for short visitor travel.
    • Apply through Iran's Embassy in The Hague before travel; the source does not establish normal visa issuance at the border for this cohort.
    • Dual Iranian nationals, work, residence, press, pilgrimage, transit, special documents and final admission remain separate.
    • The Dutch Foreign Ministry advises against all travel; this classification does not imply safety or guaranteed admission.

    Netherlands

  15. Current official routeeVisa

Slovenian ordinary passports: Iran electronic visa

Slovenian MFA guidance says Slovenian citizens can obtain an electronic visa and that airport visa issuance is suspended.

    • Apply through Iran's Foreign Ministry electronic-visa service before travel. Airport visa issuance is suspended until further notice; work, residence, special documents, carrier controls and final admission remain separate.

  16. Current official routeVisa required

Colombian ordinary passports: Iran advance visitor visa

Colombia's current Foreign Ministry table says Iranian tourist and business visas for Colombians are consular, without eVisa or arrival issuance.

    • Applies to an ordinary Colombian passport holder travelling as a short visitor.
    • The table describes consular processing and no eVisa or visa on arrival.
    • Work, residence, special documents and final admission remain outside scope.

Macao SAR ordinary passports: Iran visa-free short visits

Macao's current passport-specific DSI record directly identifies Iran as visa-free for the Macao SAR Passport, with a maximum stay of 21 days.

    • Applies only to the ordinary Macao SAR Passport selected in DSI's live Travel Convenience Privilege service.
    • The direct DSI record states a maximum stay of 21 days and marks visa-on-arrival and eVisa false.
    • Visitor purpose, passport validity, admission, security, itinerary, transit, residence, work and all non-ordinary document routes remain outside this policy.
    1 passport nationalities covered

    Macao (SAR China)

  18. Current official routeVisa required

Polish ordinary passports: Iran advance visitor visa

Polish ordinary-passport tourists obtain Iran's visa at the Embassy in Warsaw; airport collection needs a prior visa promise and is not a visa on arrival.

    • Ordinary passport tourists may apply at Iran's Embassy in Warsaw for up to 30 days.
    • Airport collection requires an Iranian mission's prior visa promise and carriers may refuse boarding on that basis alone; land and sea crossings do not issue visas.
    1 passport nationalities covered

    Poland

  19. Current official routeVisa required

Bulgarian ordinary passports: Iran advance visitor visa

Bulgaria's MFA says Bulgarian visitors first complete an electronic visa application but receive the visa at Iran's Embassy in Sofia, making this an advance mission-visa route.

    • Applies to ordinary Bulgarian passports; Bulgarian diplomatic and official passport exemptions are outside scope.
    • Complete the electronic visa application, then receive the visa at Iran's Embassy in Sofia before travel. The online form does not itself issue an eVisa.
    • Purpose, Iranian dual nationality, passport-marking restrictions, security, final admission, transit, work, residence and special-document routes remain outside this policy.
