One group agreement or destination policy can support many passport relationships. Dates are recorded only when an official source establishes them.

  1. Current official routeCitizenship

    Gambian ordinary passports: citizenship

Gambian citizenship, rather than a visitor visa category, governs the home-country entry classification. The Government Passport Office page directly describes a Gambian citizen receiving an emergency passport to travel back to The Gambia.

    • This is a citizenship normalization for a Gambian ordinary passport, not a rule for residence, former citizenship, nationality disputes, emergency, diplomatic, service or other special documents.
    • The cited Passport Office material describes return by an emergency passport after loss or destitution. Passport validity, identity, security, health, border examination and other lawful controls remain applicable.

Current GID-listed and reconciled ordinary passports: visitor visa exemption

The current GID table expressly lists 17 catalog passports with visa-exemption agreements and 11 ECOWAS states with free entry. The January 2025 central Government page additionally supports Cyprus, Denmark, Ireland and Latvia, which the newer GID table does not classify. This yields 32 supported foreign catalog passports; its conflicting visa/clearance rows do not establish a further route.

    • The GID page’s dated country entries support the 17 agreement-listed catalog codes and 11 current ECOWAS codes. Cyprus, Denmark, Ireland and Latvia are retained only because the central Government page expressly places all EU members in its waiver category and GID gives none of those four a contrary country row.
    • The waiver is modelled for ordinary nationality passports only. It does not establish British Overseas Territories, Crown Dependencies, Hong Kong, Macao, refugee, stateless, emergency, diplomatic, official, service, UN, residence or other special-document treatment.
    • The GID exemption and ECOWAS rows do not publish an exemption-stay period. The January 2025 central Government page describes the waiver visitor context as holiday or business not exceeding 90 days; duration, passport validity, yellow-fever evidence where applicable, screening, funds/onward travel, security and final admission remain subject to GID control.
    • The current GID table (modified 31 October 2025) puts many other EU or Commonwealth passports in visa and/or clearance groups, while the central page says the broad categories are exempt. Those incompatible scopes are deliberately unresolved; a clearance label is not normalized as visa on arrival, eVisa or a nationality-wide advance-visa rule.

  3. Current official routeVisa required

Named visa-and-clearance ordinary passports: advance visitor entry permission

GID's country schedule expressly places these passports in a category requiring both a visa and entry clearance; its entry rules require clearance approval before travel.

    • The Visa page expressly lists these countries as needing both visa and clearance.
    • GID requires approved entry clearance before arrival.
    • A border-issued visa cannot replace the named prior clearance.
    • GID describes sticker or endorsement issuance; no eVisa is established.
    • Work, residence, transit, health, security and special-document rules remain outside the visitor baseline.

Sudan, South Sudan, Chad, Central African Republic, Congo (Dem. Rep.), Congo (Rep.), Gabon, Angola, Burundi, Somalia, Algeria, Libya, Ethiopia, Djibouti, Eritrea, Madagascar, Comoro Islands, Equatorial Guinea, Egypt, Albania, Belarus, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Georgia, North Macedonia, Moldova, Serbia, Ukraine, Afghanistan, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Bahrain, Bhutan, Cambodia, China, Iran, Iraq, Israel, Japan, Jordan, Kazakhstan, Kuwait, Kyrgyzstan, Lebanon, Laos, Mongolia, Myanmar, Nepal, North Korea, Oman, Palestinian Territory, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Syria, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, United Arab Emirates, Uzbekistan, Yemen, Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Haiti

  4. Current official routeVisa required

Named clearance-only ordinary passports: advance visitor entry permission

GID's country schedule expressly places these passports in its clearance-only category, and the entry page makes approved clearance a pre-arrival condition.

    • The Visa page expressly puts these countries in a clearance-only category.
    • GID requires approved entry clearance before arrival; this is advance permission, not visa-free access, ETA or eVisa.
    • A general border-visa statement does not remove an expressly required clearance.
    • Admission and special-document, residence, work and transit conditions are outside the baseline.
    12 passport nationalities covered

Timor-Leste, Philippines, South Korea, Thailand, Vietnam, Zimbabwe, Ecuador, El Salvador, Honduras, Suriname, Uruguay, Venezuela

  5. Current official routeVisa on arrival

Named visa-only ordinary passports: visa on arrival

GID's country schedule expressly labels these passports visa-only, and its entry requirements expressly permit visa acquisition at a gazetted border.

    • The Visa page expressly puts these countries in a visa-only category, without entry-clearance language.
    • GID says a visa can be acquired at gazetted ports of entry; that route is normalized as visa on arrival.
    • GID describes sticker or endorsement issuance, not eVisa.
    • Admission, stay, work, residence, transit, health and security conditions remain separate.
    12 passport nationalities covered

Morocco, Andorra, Liechtenstein, Switzerland, Argentina, Brazil, Costa Rica, Cuba, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, United States

  6. Current official routeVisa-free

Current EU, Commonwealth and ECOWAS ordinary-passport short-visit exemption

The central Government's current visitor page expressly exempts United Kingdom, full EU, Commonwealth and ECOWAS citizens for holiday or business visits not exceeding 90 days. This later central guidance resolves contrary rows in GID's older nationality table.

    • Only holiday or business visits not exceeding 90 days are within this policy.
    • The cited central guidance describes citizens; this candidate normalizes the ordinary-passport visitor baseline only.
    • Employment, residence, transit, health, security and admission-screening requirements are outside this baseline.
    • This current central guidance supersedes only the table rows that directly contradict its named membership categories.

ECOWAS transitional visa-free movement for Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger

Although Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger withdrew from ECOWAS, its current official transition statement directs all ECOWAS member-state authorities to continue visa-free movement for their citizens until further notice.

    • The ECOWAS instruction is expressly temporary: it applies until further notice.
    • The Gambia is a current ECOWAS Member State and is within the authorities addressed by the instruction.
    • This is limited to the ordinary visitor-access baseline; other admission conditions remain outside scope.
    3 passport nationalities covered

    Burkina Faso, Mali, Niger

  8. Current official routeVisa-free

Named reciprocal ordinary-passport visa exemptions outside membership groups

GID's current nationality table expressly names San Marino, Tunisia and Russia in its visa-exemption-agreement category. Indonesia is excluded because the same table separately calls for entry clearance.

    • The policy uses only named states not already covered by the Government's membership-group exemption.
    • The GID schedule's contradictory Indonesia rows are deliberately held rather than normalized.
    • Admission, security, health, work, residence and transit requirements are outside scope.
    3 passport nationalities covered

    Russian Federation, San Marino, Tunisia

  9. Current official routeVisa required

    Named visa-and-entry-clearance ordinary passports

GID's live nationality schedule expressly assigns these passports to both visa and entry-clearance categories. The current entry guidance requires an approved clearance before travel, so they remain advance-permission access rather than eVisa, ETA or arrival issuance.

    • The schedule explicitly says both visa and clearance are required for this cohort.
    • GID requires a copy of approved entry clearance for travel; its stated validity is 30 days.
    • The GID service describes visas as stickers or endorsements, not electronic issuance.
    • Work, residence, transit, health, security and special-document rules remain outside the ordinary visitor baseline.

  10. Current official routeVisa required

    Named entry-clearance-only ordinary passports

GID's live nationality schedule expressly places these passports in clearance-only categories. Its entry guidance makes approval a pre-arrival condition, not an ETA, eVisa, visa-free route or arrival-issued visa.

    • The schedule expressly identifies this cohort as requiring entry clearance only.
    • GID says clearance must be approved before arrival and carried for entry.
    • The clearance format and application channel are not established as an ETA or eVisa.
    • Admission, work, residence, transit, health, security and special-document conditions remain outside scope.
    12 passport nationalities covered

Ecuador, Honduras, South Korea, Philippines, Suriname, São Tomé and Príncipe, Thailand, Timor-Leste, Uruguay, Venezuela, Vietnam, Zimbabwe

  11. Current official routeVisa on arrival

Named visa-only ordinary passports: visa issued at entry

GID's live nationality schedule calls these passports visa-only, without clearance. Its current entry guidance expressly makes a visa available from immigration officers at gazetted ports, establishing arrival issuance for this named cohort.

    • The GID schedule explicitly separates this visa-only cohort from the entry-clearance categories.
    • GID says a visa can be acquired from immigration officers at gazetted ports of entry.
    • The service describes sticker or endorsement issuance, not an eVisa.
    • Admission, work, residence, transit, health, security and special-document requirements remain separate.
    12 passport nationalities covered

Mauritanian ordinary passports: Gambia reciprocal visa waiver

Mauritania's current Foreign Affairs Ministry lists Gambia among reciprocal visa-suppression agreements without a special-passport limitation.

    • Applies to an ordinary Mauritanian passport holder travelling for a short visit.
    • The Ministry separately identifies agreements limited to diplomatic, service or official passports; it does not attach that limitation to Gambia.
    • Duration, work, residence, transit, carrier checks and final admission remain outside this classification.

Montenegrin ordinary passports: Gambia advance visa

    • Applies to an ordinary Montenegrin passport holder travelling as a short visitor.
    • The cited guidance identifies consular issuance through the Gambian Embassy in Brussels; it does not establish an electronic or arrival-issued visa.
    • Application approval, documentation and final admission remain separate requirements.
