Official evidence timeline

One group agreement or destination policy can support many passport relationships. Dates are recorded only when an official source establishes them.

  1. Current official routeVisa-free

Sierra Leone: current ECOWAS ordinary passports — visa-free entry

The ECOWAS Free Movement Protocol establishes visa-free entry for a Community citizen visiting another Member State for up to 90 days. The current ECOWAS roster maps its eleven foreign Member States; the eVisa terms also exclude all ECOWAS members from the electronic service.

    • Article 3 requires a valid travel document and international health certificate and gives a maximum 90-day stay. Immigration retains admissibility and public-order controls under the Protocol.
    • The current twelve-State roster excludes Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger following their withdrawal; the separately documented transitional treatment applies to all three below.
    • This policy does not decide residence, work, transit, crew, diplomatic, official, service, special documents, individual admissibility or any bilateral arrangement.

Benin, Cape Verde Islands, Côte d'Ivoire, The Gambia, Ghana, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Liberia, Nigeria, Senegal, Togo

French ordinary passports: Sierra Leone arrival visitor visa

Current French government guidance says French nationals remain able to obtain a visa on arrival at Freetown airport while Sierra Leone's online visa system is not yet fully operational.

    • The stated ordinary French-passport route is border issuance at Freetown airport. It is not classified as an eVisa merely because the guidance also directs short-stay applicants to an online immigration site before departure.
    • The source describes an operationally incomplete online system; confirm live carrier and airport arrangements before travel. Residence, work, transit, special passports and final admission remain separate.

  3. Current official routeVisa required

United States ordinary passport: Sierra Leone pre-travel visitor visa

Current State Department guidance requires an ordinary U.S.-passport visitor to obtain a Sierra Leone visa before travel.

    • The visa is required regardless of the length of stay and must be applied for before travel.
    • The separately paid airport-security fee is not a visa or an arrival-issuance route.

British citizen passports: specified visitor visas available on arrival

    • BD: Dhaka airport issue is discretionary, requires a return ticket and proof of funds, and is single-entry for 15 to 30 days.
    • CI: obtain approval online before travel; SNEDAI prints and issues the visa after biometric enrolment at Abidjan airport.
    • SL: visitor/business visa may be issued on arrival for USD 80 cash; JO: single-entry visit visa is available at an airport or Sheikh Hussein/North Border crossing, but not at King Hussein/Allenby Bridge.

    • For ordinary tourism or business, the source expressly permits either an eVisa before arrival or a visa on arrival; this policy records the available border-issued route.

    • This is the Ministry's ordinary-passport short-visitor baseline. The source separately labels eVisa and visa-on-arrival rows, so a bare "Visa is required" row is not recast as either route.
    • Georgia and Panama have separately stated waivers for holders of specified third-country visas. Those conditional document routes are excluded from this passport-only baseline.
    • Mission availability, passport recognition, individual admission, route, transit, work, residence, diplomatic, official, service and other special-document treatment are outside this policy.

    • Apply and pay online sufficiently before travel; the German Federal Foreign Office says issuance follows at arrival at the border after approval.
    • This is normalized as visa_on_arrival because the visa is issued at the border, despite the mandatory online pre-application.
    • Passport validity, yellow-fever documentation, health declaration, extension, work, residence, special documents and final admission remain separate.
